Out of Africa…
Portsmouth Grammar School Geography Department is delighted to extend a warm welcome to Mr Charles Mubiru, Principal of the Kikaaya College School near Kampala in Uganda. Mr Mubiru journeyed across sea and land to cement the links that already exist between his school and The Portsmouth Grammar School, following an initial visit by Geography teacher, Fiona Nicholson in October 2008.
Using the information held on the Global Gateway database, run by the British Council, Fiona researched and then undertook a very successful and joyous visit to the Kikaaya College School, with the intention of establishing a permanent link between the two schools. It is hoped that Mr Mubiru’s return visit will enable other innovative and sustainable projects to be developed between the two establishments. The long-term aims are to bid, successfully, for further funding from the DFID to enable more teacher exchanges and project development. The PGS Uganda Expedition will also be visiting KCS as part of their itinerary in Summer 2010.
Whilst in Southsea, Mr Mubiru's hosts are the Reverend Burtt, and Miss Sarah Green (DT Dept.). The whole school has embraced Mr Mubiru’s visit and he is delighted to be undertaking a variety of activities both in and out of school. He is visiting departments to observe and participate in lessons and he is enjoying the cut and thrust of discussion sessions on topics as diverse as the role of music in African culture to the influence of cults in Uganda. He is also witnessing the PGS pastoral system in full flight, and he is expanding the staff and pupils’ understanding of international issues through a series of thought-provoking assemblies.
Mr Mubiru is keen to enrich his experiences further by exploring the local area and our historical capital city. Simon Lemieux (Head of History) enthralled Mr Mubiru with a guided tour of The Historic Dockyard, Catherine Smith (Archivist) will be taking him on a walking tour of Old Portsmouth, and, through the mystical and sporting powers of Pippa Foster, Headteacher of the Portsmouth Junior School, Mr Mubiru will be paying homage to the hallowed turfs of Fratton Park. Before he returns to his landlocked homeland, Mr Mubiru will also experience the thrills of the capital city, when Fiona Nicholson and her two brothers, both Old Portmuthians, escort him on a tour of London.
Mr Mubiru enthused that he was very impressed with the school, its community, and the hospitality he had been shown. “We have a lot in common, and there is much to share between our two schools which will enrich the curriculum and benefit both pupils and teachers.”
PGS headmaster, Mr James Priory, added, “We are delighted to have a link with Uganda, and particularly The Kikaaya College School because it is such an enterprising institution. It reminds us of what a beneficial impact an educational institution can have on a community.”
Mr Mubiru returns to Africa on March 14th, but we certainly look forward to expanding our partnership with his school and deepening our friendships with his community.
